The 1998 Neuromorphic Workshop
What a place. Great science. Amazing engineering. Great people. Wonderful scenery. These are a few pictures from the last week of the 1998 NFS Neuromorphic Workshop. This page shows the 'bots, the banquet, the people, the group, the city of Telluride, Tomboy mine, Bear Creek, and the Sneffles Highline trail.
The 'bots
The robots aren't the most important part of the Neuromorphic Workshop, just the most photogenic. Here are some samples.
- Dan Lee's dog
- Marc Tilden and Nicol Schraudolph's lighter-than-air robot
- Marc Tilden and Nicol Schraudolph's balloon 'bot
- Marc Tilden drives his balloon with a flashlight
- Tobi Delbruck shows his line-following robot
- Regina Mudra's block world
- Thomas Netter's plane
- Thomas Netter show his flying 'bot
- A test of a motion sensing chip
The Banquet
There was a wonderful banquet at the end of the workshop. My favorite skit was by the Neuromorphs:
- David Nicholson, chief lumberjack
- The chorus by: David Nicholson, Peter Stepien, Chuck Higgins,
Max Risenhuber, Martin Lades
- The cast: Chuck Higgins, David Nicholson, Peter Stepien, Ania Mitros,
Eduardo Ros Vidal, and Max Risenhuber
- Rodney Douglas objecting to the "I'm a Neuromorph" skit
There were other wonderful skits
- The attack of the cows, led by XX
- Tim Pearce and Jorg Kramer fight back, while Jonathan Simon looks on
- Marc Tilden, Toby Delbruck, and Martin Lades
- Andre van Schaik lectures brilliantly, using Cosmopolitan Magazine for source material
And of course the awards and the colleagues
- The Grand Poobahs, Rodney Douglas and Christof Koch
- Christof Koch receives his just rewards
- Paul Verschure dresses like a Borg, but can't open the plastic.
- Philipp Hafliger in a tophat
- Ania Mitros learns a drinking game.
The People
Lots of great people. Here are a few of them
- Shihab Shamma cooks
- Tobi Delbruck and Shih-Chii Liu
- Ania Mitros
- Shihab Shamma
The Group
These are some of the people who made it to the last day: the group reviews the progress.
Telluride
Telluride is in a wonderful box canyon.

Tomboy Mine
One of the popular trails out of town is the road to Tomboy, an abandoned mine. Alex Koch and I biked and walked to the top.
- Looking up to Imogene Pass pass from Tomboy
- Alex Koch made it to Tomboy
- Alex Koch biking above Tomboy
- Bridalveil waterfall on the road to Tomboy
- Malcolm Slaney at Tomboy

Bear Creek
Bear Creek and its waterfall are a short walk north of town.

- Looking down towards Telluride
- (From left) Wolfgang Maass, Rodney Douglas, Sarah Douglas, Shihab Shamma and Alex Koch on the way to the waterfall
Sneffles Trail
The Sneffles Highline Trail is great. It starts in Telluride and I highly recommend it. We did the loop counter-clockwise. Wise choice. Up on the steepest part early in the morning. Summit by 10. Then the long downhill back to Telluride. First pictures on the way up to the pass
- Ania Mitros and Janet Pouliquen on top of a rock
- Halfway up, looking back down the valley.
- Ania Mitros, Philippe and Janet Pouliquen on the way up
- Looking up the valley
- Flowers everywhere
- Janet and Philippe Pouliqen and Ania Mitros near the pass
- Malcolm Slaney near the pass
And pictures from the trip back down to Telluride
- The view down the other side, the way home.
- Hiking down the talus
- Lots of Columbine, the Colorado state flower.
- Ania Mitros, Philippe and Janet Pouliquen (left to right) ford a creek.
- Ania Mitros and Janet Pouliquen scale the boulder
